Frequently Asked Questions
If you are experiencing pain or difficulty with movement you will benefit from a full physiotherapy assessment to identify the cause and figure out the best treatment plan. Sometimes your physiotherapist will refer you on to a doctor if they think a more in depth medical evaluation needs to take place alongside physiotherapy treatment.
During your first appointment your physiotherapist will spend some time talking to you to understand what your problem is, what your goals are and what the best way is to work together for you to achieve your goals. Based on your answers your physiotherapist will carry out a physical examination which will help to understand what is causing your problem, provide a diagnosis and provide you with a personalised treatment plan. All treatments will involve some sort of exercise as the fundamental underlying principle of achieving optimal physical health, alongside hands on treatments such as acupuncture, manual therapy and sports massage.
No. Whilst a doctor may refer you to physiotherapy, it isn’t always necessary to get a referral. When a doctor refers you to physiotherapy it is because physiotherapists are experts in the field of musculoskeletal and orthopaedic health. So if you have a problem that seems to be affecting your physical health it is usually best to waste no time and book an appointment with your physiotherapist first. If there is still a need for a medical evaluation your physiotherapist will inform you of this and advise that you go to your Doctor.
How long is a piece of string. This depends on many different factors including your physical ability, the severity of your issue, your engagement with treatment and your goals. Rest assured your physiotherapist will use their expertise to make the recovery process as time effective as possible, resulting in the best outcomes in the shortest amount of time possible, based on your individual circumstances. On average a course of physiotherapy treatment lasts 5-8 sessions in order to achieve recovery above and beyond pre-injury state.
